Culture and Tourism

As one of the four most prestigious academies over the last 1000 years in China, Yuelu Academy has been a famous institution of higher learning as well as a centre of academic activities and cultures since it was formally set up in the ninth year of the Kai Bao Reign of the Northern Song Dynasty (976). Yuelu Academy, surviving the Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties, was converted into Hunan Institute of Higher Learning in 1903, and Hunan Normal College, Hunan Public Polytechnic School in succession, and was finally named Hunan University in 1926. The Academy has witnessed a history of more than one thousand years without a break, so it is called a "one-thousand-year-old academy". The historical transformation from Yuelu Academy to Hunan University is an epitome of the development of China's higher education, which mirrors the vicissitudes of China's education system.

Juzhou, or Juzizhou (Orange Isle), also named Shuilu Isle, lies in the middle of the Xiangjiang River. Changsha ancestors had settled here as early as the Neolithic Age. The Isle used to be a crucial military fortress in the West Han Dynasty (206 BC-24 AD). Since ancient times, it has been regarded as a place in a picturesque landscape, boasting profound cultural deposits. Shuilu Temple, Peigong Pavilion, Gongji Tower, and River God Temple were successively built from the Six Dynasties (AD 220–589) to the Qing Dynasty (1636-1912), which attracted celebrities like Du Fu, Qi Ji, Jiang Kui, Zhang Shi, Zhu Xi, and Xin Qiji to visit and create great poems. Chairman Mao Zedong’s poem CHANGSHA: to the tune of Spring beaming in Garden was a poetic masterpiece among them. Ever since Changsha opened its port to the world in the late Qing Dynasty, UK and American merchants established customs, consulates, and clubs on the Isle, and in the period of the Republic of China, there emerged factories. At the beginning of this century, the Changsha Municipal Government started the reconstruction of the Isle. Since then, the Isle got a rebirth, shining like a pearl in the Xiangjiang River and Hunan Province.
